Hello and welcome (or welcome back?) to another episode of “how long will this last?”
JK…I know I say this every time but here’s to coming back to gently (but surely) influence your reading list.
Now, without any further ado, let’s address the biggest elephant in the room…. I don’t know if you’ve noticed but I decided that a rebrand is in order and we’re now called Dey’s reads (original, right? wink wink).
Also, stay tuned because I decided to make this a little playground where my thoughts can run wild. Which means, luckily for you (or not, depending on how you see it), you’ll see a bit of everything.
What can I can say? Jack of all trades, master of none 🙂
5 Standalones to read ASAP
Now, when time is tight and energy is low, I know I’m not the only one looking for simple standalones to devour. No time for committing to full on trilogies/series with a lot of things going on. A compelling storyline with no strings attached.
If you’re like me and you need that next dose of dopamine like yesterday. Here are 5 standalones to read as soon as you finish reading this post.
1. The Everlasting by Alix E. Harrow
I don’t usually like books with immortality timeframes (my brain is FINE with magic and phoenixes BUT centuries old? What’s THAT???). HOWEVER, this one got stuck right inside my mind, I can’t remove it. It’s whimsy, it’s emotional, it’s yearning, it’s everything you want a book to be and a bit more.
2. The Poet Empress by Shen Tao
This is the debut novel of and IT IS ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS YOU’LL EVER READ… This has the same vibes of A Song to Drown Rivers by Ann Liang and Apothecary Diaries. If you like these kind of setting, trust me and read this one!
3. A Stage Set for Villains by Shannon J. Spann
The only way for me to summarize this is a play written as a book, with a LOT of plot twists. You’ll really enjoy it and it sucks you in before you know it.
4. The Otherwhere Post by Emily J. Taylor
This has a truly new and deeply immersive concept that I was so excited to get into. In a few words: FMC discovers her father might be innocent, she poses as an apprentice (to learn scriptomancy, the art of magic letters to put it in simple terms) to have access to the truth.
4. Anxious People by Fredrik Backman, translated by Neil Smith
Read my review of this here. But basically, if you want a good time with deep meanings, characters that will leave you shocked but also empathetic…Read this!
