Hello and welcome back!
Hope y’all are having wonderful days<3
Is it just me or do you also like to read books that wrecks you emotionally from time to time? Bonus points if it causes a reading slump and nothing compares to that emotional turmoil!
If that’s something you’re looking for, here are 5 books to read when you need a good cry:
-
A Song To Drown Rivers by Ann Liang

This is inspired by the legend of Xishi, one of the famous Four Beauties of Ancient China. It follows Xishi who attracts the attention of the young military advisor, Fanli. She’s presented with the opportunity to use her beauty as a weapon. All she has to do is infiltrate the enemy palace as a spy, seduce their immoral king, and weaken them from within. Easy peasy, lemon squeezy, right RIGHT??
While there are some issues with this book and I do think it could have been executed better. I was entertained and affected by the way things went.
-
A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini

I haven’t read this yet, but it’s on my TBR (alongside The Kite Runner). One of my friends recommended it to me and apparently, it’s very moving/gut wrenching.
To the TBR list it goes!
-
As Long as the Lemon Trees Grow by Zoulfa Katouh

Salama was a pharmacy student when civil war and cries for freedom broke out in Syria. Now, she volunteers at a hospital in Homs. She’s hoping to escape her beloved country before her sister-in-law, Layla, gives birth. However, she’s pretty torn between surviving and her loyalty for her country. That doubt starts to increase as she meets the boy she was supposed to meet and maybe get engaged to one fateful day.
This is one of the best books I’ve ever read. TRULY! Everything is pErFeCt, it’s also very heavy and emotional so keep those tissues nearby!!
-
Me Before You by Jojo Moyes

This follows Louisa who has an ordinary life, living with her parents and boyfriend in their tiny village. She takes a job caring for Will Traynor, who is wheelchair bound after an accident. Will had a huge life before and, as you can imagine, it’s hard for him to reconcile where he was with where he’s now.
He’s moody and stubborn, but Lou is set on showing him that there’s more to life than what he thinks.
Lowkey a comfort read/watch for me, despite the…stuff iykyk 🙂
-
The Poppy War trilogy by R.F. Kuang

I have no words actually…. Do you know that feeling when you start to sleep, you’re going down the stairs when suddenly, there’s no step? And you’re falling into the abyss and there’s nothing to grasp to slow the fall? Yeah, that’s a bit what reading this was like for me. I could see that we’re heading very much south but it’s just inevitable.
